ROOM 14 - WELCOME
Welcome to our Room 14 blog.
My apologies for having taken so long to get it up and running - but, better late than never.
Unfortunately, it comes down to transferring accounts etc when changing classrooms, which can be a bit messy.
Term 1 was incredibly busy - as usual!
We worked on introducing our new writing concept to the children - storytelling.
You could ask them about how they produced their writing on the 'Freedom Bird' and 'The 3 Billy Goats Gruff'.
We now follow a method of Hear, Map, Step and Speak to develop the children's oral language first.
They then continue on with writing as a class, then substituting certain characters, settings, plots etc to make it their own.
During Term 2, our first story will be about Daedulus and Icarus.
The following video shows a version of the story:

We will be looking at multiplication for maths during this term, followed by algebra and geometry.
With regards to art, we will be focusing on creating a piece of work for the Cultural Festival - more details to follow when received! As we only have a limited amount of chromebooks/i-pads per class, a focus for using these will be on keyboard skills. I have joined the class in a typing club in order for them to be familiar with a computer/device keyboard - hopefully you will hear about this from your children in a couple of weeks time.
Hope everyone is enjoying these two weeks off.
Will see everyone on Monday 1st May - have a great holiday.

Rube Goldberg Machines
Room 14 had a lot of fun designing complex Rube Goldberg machines. The project required creativity and perseverance. The children had to work together and accept failures, working to improve their machines to make them successful.
Here are some videos of the machines:

Basket Ball Video
This is a link to the basket ball video we watched together. We were talking about The Power of Yet and that if at first you don't succeed, then try and try again. After you have watched it, you can post a comment. A comment could be something like, "He was really serious about practicing," or "Even though he didn't win, he...." Comments such as, "This is awesome," aren't very interesting.

Growth Mindset - making our brains stronger.
Watch these videos again about Mojo. How can you make your brain stronger?
Mojo videos
We watched some videos about people who had to carry on after making a mistake, or who tried really hard even though life was tough. You might like to watch these again or share them with your family.

Being creative!
After reading the book The Tin Forest, we made our own forest out of cardboard junk. When Aayden brought in a tube that was too thick to cut with scissors, it was time to bring out the saw!
The Newbies!
Caroline, Latasha and Jesse all enjoyed their Mihi Whakatau and felt very proud to be welcomed to Opawa School.
